I create analogue collages, made from vintage papers that are 50 to 150 years old. I select them for their colours and the traces of time they carry : discoloration marks, water stains, ink spots or any kind of blemishes. These imperfections give them a deeper texture, juxtaposed over their initial shade.
I cut them to compose an abstract and geometric assemblage. The colours entering the composition of a collage are patiently selected : various combinations are tested, until I reach a blend of shades that will sing together. The same process is applied on creating the different shapes that combine harmoniously.
My collage work is based on exploring the idea of contrasts. Contrast of textures, smooth or rough. Contrast of colours, faded or vivid. Contrast of surfaces, clean or stained. Contrast of shapes, curved or linear.
I began to experiment another art form a year ago : engraving on Tetra Pak. I use the aluminium film on the inside of milk cartons, a thin metal surface on which I can engrave lines and shapes. This aluminium plate is inked and goes under a traditional paper press to get a print. As the Tetra Pak plate is a very fragile material, I can only print 2 copies out of the original plate. Those prints compose a series entitled “Milk Modules”.
An important aspect of my work, in collage or engraving, is about using materials that we don’t look at, don’t use, don’t notice the potential. My practice is guided by the idea of revealing their interest, their past, their singularity.
