Sean Noonan (b.1986) makes paintings that interpret moments from the outside world with a markedly present touch. He paints on surfaces often found nearby, such as weathered wood and collected papers, embracing the inherent history within the materials and evoking recollections of inferred and imagined pasts. He strives to keep the language of his mark-making unfastened and free, summoning early crude forms that carry weight, feeling, and personalities which exist in our world but have no inherent defining reference. Seeking to capture marks singularly his own, similar to the cultivation of a person’s own handwriting developed through years of use, these motifs exist in a fluid state, with the artist anchoring them through methods and traditions of historical painting.
Noonan is a Hudson Valley based artist and a graduate of Pratt Institute. He has exhibited nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include: LKIF Gallery - Seoul, Korea; Resort - Baltimore, MD; Left Field Gallery - Ojai, CA; Galleri Kai - Copenhagen, Denmark; Poker Flats - Williamstown, MA; Teffia Gallery - Kingston, NY; Art at Kings Oaks - Newtown, PA; SOHO Review - London, UK.
