I’m still learning a lot about how to carve and build these sculptures, so they are kind of a big project that is slowly evolving. The process of making art is important to me. A carved wooden sculpture has a completely different character than a painting, because it operates in 3D space, but also because it presents a clearly different process. I am thinking a lot about the craft of painting and carving when I make these. So shapes, mark making, and especially color are things that I’m really focused on. I want these to be strong abstract compositions. But to me there is also something great about figurative painting or sculpture, that can’t be achieved with abstraction. I like art that has a person in it, because it is like seeing a little version of myself. So that’s what I usually try to make.
